Architectural Styles

1. Georgian
Date: 1720-1840
Location: U.S. and England
Characteristics:
a. Panel front door centered, topped with rectangular windows
b. Chimneys on both sides of the home
c . Larger windows with 9 or 12 panes on the main floors
d. Symetric Arrangements
e. A portico in the middle of the roof with a window in the middle is more common with post-Georgian styles

2. Expressionist
Date: First decade of 20th century
Location: Europe
Characteristics:
a. Distortion of form for an emotional effect
b. Subordination of realism to symbolic or stylistic expression of inner experience
c. Utilises creative potential of artisan craftsmanship
d. Often hybrid solutions, irreducible to a single concept
e. Conception of architecture as a work of art

3. International
Date: 1920-1930
Location: Europe, U.S. all over the world
Characteristics:
a. rectilinear forms
b. light, taut plane surfaces that have been completely stripped of applied ornamentation and decoration
c. open interior spaces
d. visually weightless quality
e. Glass and steel, in combination with usually less visible reinforced concrete
